More on ‘Know Thyself’

In yesterday’s blog, one learns that the US Library of Congress reported that many Americans are being influenced by the teaching of self-interest by Ayn Rand. In that blog, I concluded that her teaching is irrational and is not taught by Jesus Christ. Here, I want to expand my thoughts on the teachings of Jesus Christ on ‘know thyself.’

To a believer in God, the symbol ‘self’ means the free act of God within us. This free act is empowered by God’s act so that we are interested in our universal purpose. So, when a person acts to know, this act is not caused by something outside, that is, by some other thing-in-itself in the universe. So, a self-interest is something of interest only to our mind. At birth, for instance, Mother becomes a point of interest to us. This interest causes our senses and mind to build a mental model of your Mother. As we grow, mature, and take our last breath of air, many models of the existing things-in-themselves that God made for the universe will fill our minds. Each model of the existing things in the universe will reveal new truths about God. (See St. Paul at Rom. 1:19-20: "19. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. 20. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are already seen, being understood by the things that are made, even the eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: .... " )

If you read the Gospel of Thomas, (click) more sayings of Jesus Christ will be found on our knowing abilities. For instance, saying three tells us that the kingdom is both inside and outside of us. This means that man (1) conceives God and the things in universe with a spiritual thing-in-itself (the mind) and (2) lives in the universe with a different thing-in-itself (mind-body). Since no person can conceive God’s whole kingdom in one lifetime, I argue that a spiritual thing-in-itself reincarnates to a higher stage of life if the development of a person’s mind has grown consistently with the higher stage.
